Our team was commissioned by an SEN school in Hampshire to renew an area of worn and deteriorated surfacing located along a sloped bank within the school grounds. The existing surface had become uneven and unsafe, creating potential accessibility and maintenance concerns within a space used by pupils and staff. The objective of the project was to remove the failing surfacing and replace it with a new, safe, and durable rubber mulch solution. Given the school environment and the sensitive nature of the site, the work needed to be carried out with minimal disruption and with great care taken to leave the surrounding area clean and undisturbed. Swipe for more The project focused on improving safety and durability while respecting the existing landscape. Key elements of the works included: Removal of Existing Surfacing: All worn surfacing was carefully removed to allow for proper preparation and installation of the new surface. Rubber Mulch Installation: A new rubber mulch surface was installed across the banked area, providing a soft, non-slip, and impact-absorbing finish suitable for an SEN environment. Sympathetic Ground Preparation: The new surfacing was laid to follow the natural contours of the bank, ensuring stability while maintaining the appearance of the landscape. The completed surface offers improved safety, longevity, and a clean, natural finish that blends seamlessly into the school grounds. This project presented several access and logistical challenges: Restricted Access: The surfacing area was located on a bank within a fenced enclosure, making access for machinery and materials particularly difficult. All works were carefully planned and carried out using appropriate manual handling techniques to ensure safe and efficient installation. Working on a Gradient: Installing surfacing on a sloped area required precise preparation and careful laying to achieve a consistent, secure finish that would remain stable over time. Minimal Site Impact: Particular care was taken to protect surrounding surfaces, fencing, and landscaping. The site was left clean and tidy on completion, with no visible sign of our presence other than the newly installed surfacing. Additional Fencing Repairs: While on site, we also identified sections of the timber perimeter fencing that were damaged. We completed these repairs during the project, leaving the area fully safe, functional, and visually tidy for the client. The completed project successfully transformed a previously worn and unsafe area into a clean, safe, and durable space. The new rubber mulch surfacing provides a long-lasting solution that enhances safety while remaining low maintenance and visually discreet. The school was extremely pleased with the quality of the installation and the care taken throughout the works, particularly the minimal disruption, the sympathetic approach to the banked area, and the additional fencing repairs completed proactively during the project.
