The Brief

The project required the removal of the existing rubber surfacing and full excavation of the area, followed by the installation of a new rubber mulch surface combined with bespoke EPDM graphics.

The objective was to provide a level, safe, and durable play area with creative graphics that enhanced the play experience, while carefully managing access challenges and protecting the surrounding landscape.

Key features

The resurfaced play area incorporated multiple design elements to improve safety, durability, and play value. Key aspects of the works included

Full excavation and removal of existing surfacing: The existing rubber surfacing was carefully removed and disposed of in line with regulations, and the site was fully excavated to prepare for the new surface

Rubber mulch installation: A new rubber mulch surface was installed across the entire area, providing a slip-resistant, impact-absorbing finish suitable for children of all ages

Custom EPDM graphics and wear pads: Bespoke EPDM graphics were incorporated throughout the site, including leaf and acorn designs that complemented the surrounding trees. Additional EPDM wear pads were installed in high wear areas under equipment and at entrance gates to protect the surface and ensure longevity

Levelled surfacing across variable depths: The thickness of the safety surfacing varied across the site. To prevent undulations, each section of the area was excavated to a different depth, creating a completely level finished surface

Minimising impact on surrounding landscape: Access to the site was 100 metres across a boggy field. Careful planning and protective measures ensured no damage was caused to the surrounding grass and landscape during deliveries and installation

Obstacles and Solutions

Several challenges required careful planning and technical solutions

Restricted access and site protection: The long, boggy access route required the use of temporary matting and careful traffic planning to prevent damage to the grass while transporting materials and equipment

Variable surfacing depths: The safety surfacing required different thicknesses across the site. We excavated each area to a tailored depth to ensure a level final surface without any undulations

High wear areas: To maintain long-term durability, EPDM wear pads were installed in key high-traffic zones under equipment and at entrance points, designed in bespoke leaf and acorn patterns to enhance the visual appeal

Efficient excavation and installation: The full excavation, removal, and installation of the new surfacing were carefully coordinated to minimise disruption and ensure a smooth workflow from start to finish
