Pathway Renovation for Local Trust Field

Our team was commissioned by a local trust to renovate an existing pedestrian pathway that runs around a large open field.

The Brief

Over time, the pathway surface had deteriorated, with contaminated stone causing drainage issues, uneven footing, and an overall decline in usability. The pathway edges had also broken down, allowing material to spread into the surrounding grassed areas.

The objective of the project was to restore the pathway to a safe, durable, and visually tidy condition while preserving the integrity of the surrounding field. Due to the site’s regular public use, the work needed to be completed efficiently and with minimal disruption.

Key features

The renovation works involved a full upgrade of the existing pathway, which measured approximately 475 metres in length. Key elements of the project included:

Removal of Contaminated Surface Material: The existing stone surface was carefully removed and disposed of to eliminate contamination and provide a clean foundation for the new pathway.

Re-Excavation and Edge Definition: New pathway edges were re-dug to clearly define the route, prevent future material migration, and improve the overall appearance of the path.

Self-Binding Gravel Installation: Nearly 100 tonnes of high-quality self-binding gravel were installed and compacted to create a smooth, durable, and permeable walking surface suitable for year-round use.

The finished pathway provides a natural-looking, hard-wearing surface that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape while offering improved accessibility and longevity.

Obstacles and Solutions

This project required careful planning and execution to overcome several key challenges:

Field Protection: As the pathway runs directly alongside a grassed field, protecting the surrounding ground was a priority. Access routes and working methods were carefully planned to prevent vehicle damage and soil compaction across the field.

Time Constraints: To minimise disruption to the trust and its users, the project needed to be completed as quickly as possible. Efficient scheduling, coordinated material deliveries, and a well-organised workforce allowed us to complete the full renovation within just four days.

Consistency Over Distance: Maintaining a consistent finish over a 475m pathway required precise levelling and compaction throughout. Our team worked in controlled sections to ensure a uniform surface and high-quality finish from start to finish.

Conclusion

The completed project successfully restored the pathway to a safe, functional, and visually appealing standard. The new self-binding gravel surface provides a long-lasting solution that enhances accessibility while remaining sympathetic to the natural setting.

The local trust was extremely pleased with the speed of delivery and the care taken to protect the surrounding field throughout the works. Completing the project in just four days ensured minimal disruption while delivering a high-quality result that will serve the site for many years to come.
