The Brief

The original space had become outdated and no longer met the needs of its users, with worn equipment and surfacing that limited both safety and play value.

The objective of the project was to completely transform the area into a modern, safe, and engaging play space. This included the removal of all existing equipment and surfaces, followed by the installation of new play equipment, high-quality safety surfacing, and enhanced boundary features to create a secure and stimulating environment.

Key features

The renovated play area was designed to offer a varied and inclusive play experience while meeting current safety standards. Key elements of the project included:

Full Site Strip-Out: All existing play equipment and surfacing were carefully removed to allow for a complete redesign of the space.

EPDM Safety Surfacing: New EPDM safety surfacing was installed across the entire play area, providing a durable, slip-resistant, and impact-absorbing surface.

Bespoke Graphic Design: Custom-designed graphics were incorporated into the EPDM surfacing, adding colour, creativity, and visual interest while encouraging imaginative and interactive play.

New Play Equipment: A range of new equipment was installed, including a spinning bowl, basket swing, and a multi-play unit, offering a balance of physical, social, and imaginative play opportunities.

Seating Installation: New seating was added to provide comfortable resting and supervision areas for carers and visitors.

Perimeter Fencing and Access Control: The play area was enclosed with new perimeter fencing and fitted with a self-closing easy-access gate, improving safety and security for all users.

The completed space delivers a vibrant, modern play environment that is both visually striking and highly functional.

Obstacles and Solutions

Renovating the entire play area required careful coordination and planning to overcome several logistical challenges:

Restricted Working Space: Due to limited space outside the play area, our site compound had to be established within the newly constructed play space itself. Works were carefully phased and sequenced to allow construction activities to progress efficiently while protecting completed areas from damage.

Tight Site Access and Deliveries: Access to the site was restricted, making deliveries by large vehicles particularly challenging. A detailed traffic management plan was implemented to coordinate delivery times, vehicle movements, and unloading areas, ensuring materials arrived safely and without disruption to surrounding areas.

Site Logistics Management: Managing the removal of existing equipment alongside the installation of new surfacing and play features required precise scheduling to maintain programme timescales and ensure a smooth transition between project stages.

Quality and Safety Standards: All equipment and surfacing were installed in line with relevant safety standards, with close attention paid to fall zones, clearances, and final finishes.

Design Coordination: The integration of bespoke EPDM graphics required detailed planning and accurate installation to achieve a high-quality finish that aligned with the overall play area layout and equipment positioning.
