The Brief

Our team was commissioned by a local nursery to transform an outdoor play area that had become unsuitable for use. The existing space featured a muddy surface with exposed tree roots, posing trip hazards and drainage issues. The area also contained outdated equipment that no longer met the nursery’s needs.

The objective of the project was to design and construct a bespoke timber mud kitchen that would create a safe, engaging, and durable outdoor learning environment for the children. The solution needed to protect the existing tree, enhance play value, and ensure easy maintenance for nursery staff.

Key features

The new mud kitchen was custom-built to fit seamlessly into the natural setting, using robust, pressure-treated timber to ensure longevity and weather resistance. Key features include:

Integrated Storage: Ample under-counter shelving and cupboard space were built in to help the nursery keep play items organised and tidy.

Removable Plastic Troughs: Durable plastic troughs were fitted into the worktops, allowing for easy removal and cleaning after use.

Working Taps: Functional taps were installed to enable safe and accessible water play for the children.

Rubber Mulch Flooring: The existing muddy ground was replaced with a soft, permeable rubber mulch surface, providing a clean, non-slip area that is gentle on falls and allows gaseous exchange to protect the tree roots.

Storytelling Chair: As an additional gesture, we provided a handcrafted “Storytelling Chair”, creating a focal point for outdoor learning and imaginative play.

The completed installation provides a functional, visually appealing, and child-friendly space that promotes creativity, sensory play, and outdoor engagement.

Obstacles and Solutions

Delivering this project came with several challenges that required careful planning and consideration:

Tree Root Protection: The mature tree in the centre of the area was an important feature to preserve. To avoid damaging the roots, all excavation was carried out by hand, ensuring precision and minimal disturbance to the tree’s natural structure.

Ground Preparation: Working around existing roots and uneven ground required careful levelling. The rubber mulch surface was chosen for its flexibility and permeability, allowing it to mould over roots without restricting growth.

Site Cleanliness: Maintaining a clean and safe working environment within an operational nursery presented logistical challenges. Our team used protective matting and ground sheets throughout the project to prevent mud and debris from spreading, ensuring the site remained tidy and disruption-free.
